"...on her way to being some of the music industry's finest..." - Women in Entertainment Magazine "...natural born poet songwriter...Grade: A" - GuitarLab Magazine "...the temperature is definitely rising...vocal chops to crack the big time..." - Buddyhollywood.com Go ahead. Just *try* calling Isul a "folk-singer" to her face or invite her to another "chick singer/songwriter" night. Oh, don't forget to call her an "Asian-American" artist. Do all this and Isul *will* come after you like a hurricane, wash out all these pre-conceptions and stifling labels and have you rebuilding your very musical core. Okay so, Isul (born and bred in NYC) may have started out in fall of 2005 as a solo singer/songwriter wielding her vintage acoustic guitar for tips across the country (San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles...), and capturing attention because of her ethnicity. Even solo, she scored exposure through spots on international TV (ABS-CBNI, 100,000 viewers a day) and inclusions in compilations CDs (circulation in 1,200+ Australian venues). But the Isul you hear and see today pounds on a cherry red Gibson ES335 electric and captivates audiences of all sizes and colors with her powerful vocals that can soar from sweet seduction to angsty growls. Enter drummer Pinky Hawken and bassist Eric Alonzo in late 2006, serious young musicians in search of a serious vision, which they find in Isul and each other. They fly and grow at a freakish pace over a matter of just weeks. Hawken and Alonzo's heavier undertones lend Tool and Rage-like groove to Isul's female-influenced songwriting (Ani DiFranco, No Doubt, Fiona Apple). An unstoppable trio with a big sound, the Isul Kim Band create a brand of edgy, indie poprock that croons nostalgic for the pain of adolescence and screams hopeful like the stalker next door. Isul's lyrics reflect an obsession with the lives of "others", telling stories through colorful alteregos. But before you can point fingers and say "schizoprenia", the melodies seep into your head, the phrases get stuck, you mirror Isul's mischeivous smile...and you blush as you realize that you actually can relate to the criminal in the song "Outlaw" or find compassion in the song "Dirty Magazine" or empathize with the "other woman" in "She Gets Home". But don't look for any recorded versions of these songs online or in stores...yet! The Isul Kim Band is currently gearing up to record their full-length debut Album later this summer/fall. In the meantime, the band's dynamic and driving live shows are their official album "pre-release", showcasing a sound that keeps bringing back and growing their circle of fans and friends at each of their shows. Join them and get ready for something real and explosive... |
